Ordnance Survey : Area Books and Books of Reference
The first edition sheets of the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 (25" to one-mile) do not show the field/parcel areas. This information, shown in acres, was published in small booklets, issued by parish for each county. Up to October 1879, what the land was used for was also given for rural areas. Such booklets are not common but are needed in order to obtain acreages.
Each booklet usually has a page of explanatory remarks showing type characters used for various boundaries and settlement names, a couple of pages of abbreviations used and a table for converting acres into roods and perches. In addition, each booklet has very useful index maps for each full six-inch sheet on which the parish lies. Finally, each has the table of areas, parcel number and the sheets on which they occur.
